NZSSD TYPE 2 DIABETIES GUIDELINES - WEIGHT BASED TREATMENT
- Treatment of hypoglycaemia for people with type 2 diabetes who weigh less than 70 kg, and for most people with type 1 diabetes, is to eat 15 g of a quick-acting carbohydrate immediately. (HypoPak Glucose 15gram)
- People with type 2 diabetes who weigh over 70 kg should eat 30 g of rapid-acting carbohydrate (HypoPak Glucose 30gram)
These amounts may be less for children or people using an insulin pump. - Retest your glucose level in 15 minutes, If it's above 4 mmol/L, have a carbohydrate snack. (HypoPak Vanilla Biscuit) If it's still below 4 mmol/L, repeat the same amount of rapid-acting carbohydrate and retest in 15 minutes.

NZSSD TYPE 2 DIABETIES GUIDELINES - GLYCAEMIC TARGETS
HbA1c is the most practical target tool as reflects glycaemic control over the previous 3 months. HbA1c is a blood test that measures the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the past two to three months.
The target HbA1c in most patients with diabetes is < 53 mmol/mol
Low Risk - < 48 mmol/mol
NZSSD TYPE 2 DIABETIES GUIDELINES - LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT
Lifestyle changes are essential at all times for the management of type 2 diabetes including developing an individualised weight management plan
Aim for 5-10% loss of total body weight if the patient is overweight (BMI > 30 kg/m2 OR BMI > 25 kg/m2 with waist circumference > 88 cm in women or > 102 cm in men)
Aim for 10-15% loss of total body weight loss for remission of type 2 diabetes
The cornerstones of lifestyle changes are:
- Healthy eating
- Physical activity
- Diabetes education and support aiming to increase self-management
- Healthy sleep
How to use HypoPak
Step one
Test / Alert
Blood sugar (Glucose) levels that are at or below 4 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) indicates low blood sugar / Hypoglycemia. And needs to be treated quickly.
Step Two
Consume Glucose
Based on your weight. And the NZSSD Guidelines. Consume either a 15g HypoPak Glucose solution (70kg and under) or a 30g HypoPak Glucose solution (75kg and over)
Step three
Wait + Carbohydrate
After Consuming Glucose. Wait fifteen minutes and then make sure to consume HypoPak 20g Carbohydrate. If needed. Repeat entire process as necessary.
